Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is needed when a tooth's nerve is very inflamed, infected, or non-vital. This can be the result of a deep cavity, cracked tooth or flawed filling.

An opening is made in the surface of the tooth to allow access to the tooth's nerve and blood vessels. Small dental instruments are used to remove the damaged tissues all the way to the tip of the root. The roots are sealed and a temporary filling is placed on top.

After root canal treatment the tooth may be susceptible to fracture; therefore, a crown is often recommended.
